The discipline of slaves was not a job taken lightly. In fact, there were those whose chief occupation was that of punishment enforcer. Many forms of physical correction were used, but by far, the common tool of discipline, was the whip.

In January 1792 an advertisement was placed in the Bahamas Gazette. An employer was in need of a whipper.

A PERSON to act in the Capacity of WHIPPER, to whom good encouragement will be given.
